Thoughts of the week 24

I thought I had finished writing about nature and nurture and their impact on lives, but actually realised I haven’t.  There is more I would like to share with you about it.  Because actually there is something else closely related to it that I haven’t actually touched on yet - which leads me to circumstances.

Circumstances?  Not just nature and nurture?  Nope.  Social status can be part of it, schools attended, situations that are out of the control of either the individual adult/s or child/ren.  Each of them contribute to how a child grows and develops and what they become or do in their future.

An individual can have what appears to be everything in life - the ones that appear to be born “with a silver spoon in their mouths” - or however you to want phrase it.  But appearances can be truly deceptive.  As someone looking in from the outside, it may seem as though that particular individual has everything they could possibly want, but the circumstances may not be as is thought.

I was watching one documentary and looking at generations in a family.  They were originally brought over from Africa as slaves.  They had no choice in what they did, and were viewed basically as property.  Segregation was rampant and their lives were not their own.

Moving on in years, the parents moved from the south of the USA to New York and tried to make their lives better for themselves and their children.  They put everything they had into working and studying and having a more “middle class” kind of life.  I totally understand the desire to better themselves when they had the opportunity to.

The daughter went to study psychology but realised it really wasn’t what she wanted to do so ended up in culinary school.  Looking back at what slaves had to do in the past, it appeared to be a backwards step but ended up not being so.

TREASURE

Life may appear to be going backwards, but I never know what is going to happen and what seems to be wrong could be what takes me to heights I never dreamed of.
