Thoughts of the week 22

One of the things I have been considering is the different levels of ability in work and the kinds of structure needed to craft together something.

As a child, there were a few different instruments I learned to play.  Piano, recorder, clarinet and something like a harpsichord.  Now, I discovered that I could play the oboe when I tried out one a friend of mine had and actually considered getting one for myself.

Having said that, my skills, I think, were pretty average.  I don’t possess the ability to produce music for a living.  I enjoy listening to music but that doesn’t mean I can recreate it myself.  I am never going to be a concert performer of any of these instruments.

Then I thought about the fact that you DO get professionals who play at concerts and are in orchestras, operas and all sorts.  And I will admit that when I have watched Andre Rieu (for example) his charisma/personality/whatever it is, BRINGS OUT the best in the musicians he travels round the world with.  Still doesn’t mean it is something I would like to do myself, but people who get these roles and can perform well, can make an outstanding difference to others who listen to it.

Or even think about something like horse riding.  I loved to go as a child and have lessons.  It was one of the joys in my life.  But jumping over big fences or going to something like the Grand National just was never going to happen.  And that’s ok.

People have different skills and abilities and I guess the important thing is to discover WHAT they are and what is the best way to use them.

TREASURE

Figuring out where I fit in the world and the abilities I have for different things is important.  And sometimes, it can even surprise me when I try something new and discover that actually it is something I can do.
