Thoughts of the week 19

One of the things I have been considering this week is the idea that someone is obsessed with a particular subject.  I was watching a programme on the tv where a woman was pointed to as that and I wondered if that was really true or they didn’t know what precise wording to use.

When I hear that word “obsession” I automatically feel that it’s an extremely NEGATIVE word and there is nothing positive about it.  It almost makes me want to hide from the person.  And if you are obsessed with a PERSON or a thing, I think it can turn unhealthy or nasty very quickly.

But, on the other hand, when you become obsessed with a job so that you spend HOURS AND HOURS every week, I think it can be very beneficial.  There are so many different jobs in the world and so many different ways to do things.  To become an expert in ANYTHING, it takes time, effort, energy, imagination, dedication, and self control.

I remember the very first surgery I had to reconstruct my face.  The man who sent me to the surgeon was invited to watch it (which he accepted).  A few days later, he rang me and said (with awe in his voice) “OH MY GOODNESS!  I have seen a MAESTRO at work!  You wouldn’t believe this, but that surgeon measured thing to the nearest quarter millimetre while he was fixing you up.  I have never seen someone so competent in all my life.”

Now a surgeon cannot become a maestro by just sitting doing nothing or doing a surgery maybe once a week or month.  They have to do it day after day, paying attention to every little detail to see how they can improve or change things.  I know that I PERSONALLY would NEVER want someone to operate on me if they did it as a sideline or even maybe as a second job.  I would like to have someone who KNOWS what they are doing and has had multiple successes in surgery.

And yes, I guess you could call them obsessive.  But I don’t think they are.  I believe they are highly skilled individuals.  And there are some of them in every walk of life.

TREASURE

Highly qualified and practised people are just that.  They don’t have to worry about whether they can do it or not because they KNOW they can through years of practice and honing their technique.
