Perception vs Reality
was watching a cartoon with Johnathan and one of the characters had a birthday and all the friends decided they were going to throw a party. But this particular individual did NOT want to have a party.
Everybody assumes that a birthday party is universally liked by all. But actually, that isn’t true. As Johnathan grew up and I saw just how much he hated celebrations of any kind especially hating the song “happy birthday” there was no way I would ever put him under what he would perceive to be torture and it would ruin any chance of him actually enjoying the time around the day.
I know I’ve mentioned in the past that one year we took him to a shopping centre on his actually birthday and we asked him what he would like for his birthday. Admittedly, every year up until this point, I had always got him a birthday cake, but he looked at Kevin and I and insisted he wanted some jam tarts. That’s what he wanted, so that was what he was going to get.
Forcing someone to celebrate the way you would enjoy it, doesn’t make it better for them. In fact, it ruins the day and any enjoyment they could have experienced during that time. Sometimes it can be so traumatic, the individual then dreads not only their birthday, but that of others around them.
So, why do it?
TREASURE
Perception is that everybody enjoys a party. Is it true?
