I never knew

I never knew how the sun lit the earth

Nor why stars sang in the sky

What made the moon look peaceful

And colours yet more vibrant.

But there was one thing I surely knew

Whenever a rainbow spread its beauty

A hope of the promise secured

Written deep in my heart.

Can you imagine why it’s like

To stare across the vastness?

Feeling so alone among people

Knowing babies were my constant:

Loving children was my lifeline

A way to know I was still me

Never doubted my love for them

Knowing that their love was real

Then one day a new path opened

I found the life I had craved

Someone to see and love me

Helping me deal with my pain.

And the rainbow has turned full circle

I know my children are in heaven

But I have that rainbow promise

A baby born from a dark time.

Will I ever work it all out?

Figure out what happened?

Understanding brings us clarity

But we don’t know another’s thoughts

So does this really matter to me?

To make sense of everything past?

Some things can be worked out

While others are left in the dark.

But the light is always with me

The glow of a rainbow bright

I need to reside in its beauty

And trust in the life to come.
